Design appears glitzy career-wise and yet tactical at the same time to aspiring students and their parents, who have no idea where to place a designer in the industry. Quite simply, it does not seem to make sense in the conventional business hierarchy i.e. would you ever see a designer as a MD of a company, or as a senior government official, some years down the line?
Indira Nooyi has recently created a position of Chief Design Officer in Pepsico.
Mauro Porcini joined PepsiCo in 2012 as its first Chief Design Officer. In this newly created position, Mauro is infusing design thinking into PepsiCo’s culture and is leading a new approach to innovation by design that impacts the company’s product platforms and brands.
Firms like Godrej, SAP, IBM, Dr. Reddy’s Lab, Future Group etc. have incorporated ‘Design’ as a corporate philosophy than just a tactical deliverable. That necessarily means that these cities are ‘putting more effort to everyday planning and execution in favour of public good’.
In the last few years, there are designers with a university degree and there are trained ‘design thinkers’ who happen to come from diverse fields and got trained in design ways. Innovation consulting companies like Turian Labs, employs both kinds. The field is now ripe for a massive revolution. The advent of ‘digital’ when the world is keen on inventing autonomous vehicles, AI and VR, designers (the doers and the thinkers) would tend to their role more and more in the center of attention, to make sense of technology with a more ‘humanized’ approach.
